Dark Days

The past week has been mostly gloomy here in Colorado Springs. The cold weather is here…37 degrees is typical. The chill plus the time change has put a damper on outdoor activities. We did manage to get a hike in at Red Rock Canyon and the Husband checked out the mountain bike trails and the freeride mountain bike park.

The gloomy weather infiltrated into my mood this past week. Although I’d sometimes like to pretend that I am solely focused on new adventures and the fun stuff outside of work; it’s not completely true. As a therapist, we spend a great amount of time with our patients, and a majority of that time is spent challenging, pushing the limits, comforting, and consoling them.  Also, healthcare professionals will tell you that sometimes life just isn’t fair, and that’s what I’ve been having a hard time dealing with this week. There are times that I’m on the frontline when a person hears news that will change their life forever, and often times the physician leaves the room and I’m there to answer the questions, hold the hands, and dole out the tissues. A fellow therapist said that we often spend more hours a day with our patients than our families and that they become friends and family to us. I feel compassion and empathy for these friends and sometimes I just can’t help but take that home with me.

To combat the dark days of this past week, I’ve been listening to some tunes like Adele, Ryan Adams, and The Beatles while looking through some thought-provoking blogs:

fasterbarnacle– blog about the wild execution of life

terriadams– “tweaking how people think about disabilities”

www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/nick– I think this guy was on Oprah

www.disablog.com– great videos & current events that impact all of us

www.servicepuppyruby.blogspot.com– ever wonder where service dogs come from? well, here’s one story

www.chocolatecherrypie.wordpress.com– a mother raising girls, one of which has multiple medical concerns.

www.pushingthelimits.com– adapting the wheelchair lifestyle with outdoor recreation & sports

The forecast for this week? Mostly sunny with a high of 62* 🙂
